Excel: Sort Column By Color

Sorting in Excel is a pretty simple #techtip, but thought I would share since several clients did not know Excel allows sorting by cell color.

Use case: You have a column filled with data, and you’ve used colors to code the values. You want to sort all the “green” cells at the top.

Your data looks something like this:

Turn on Filters – Select the header cell/row and click on “Sort & Filter” >> “Filter”

The column/row header will now have an arrow to the right.

Let’s do some sorting

  • First, pull down the drop-down menu on the header
  • Next select “Sort by Color”
  • Then select the color you want to be at the top of the list.

After the sort, your list would resemble below. Green is now at the top of the list.

You can also create a more advanced color sort you can follow the steps above, however, click on “Custom Sort…”
